Blog Assignment for 2-25-11

"Write a Blog post about the Jumping and Platform topic, share your learning experience! Were the instructions clear? Were their any instructions you felt were missing. Were you able to finish the tutorial? Will you use this tutorial in your game? If you will use Jumping and Platforms, please describe how you will use it."

Overall, I think that I struggled with this particular topic the most. The instructions were pretty easy to comprehend and understand at first, but as the tutorial went on, it seemed to get far more difficult to understand. It could very well have just been a general lack of understanding on my part and not the author's, but I was still slightly confused. I was able to finish the first portion of the tutorial, but not all of the advanced portion. We do plan on using this in our game; we will have our hero navigating platforms and past enemies and obstacles on a semi-regular basis, so hopefully it will serve us well.

Blog Assignment for 2-18-11

"Write a blog about the timer category that we went over on the Globaloria curriculum. Tell me how you would use this in your team game. How could you make the timer go faster? How would you rate this tutorial using a number from 1 to 10; 10 being the best and 1 being the lowest rating. Tell me why you gave it the rate you used."

Learning about timers and how they can interact with a game was a lot of fun. As far as how our team might put this fantastic feature to use in our game, we may put a countdown timer on certain boss battles, so that the player has the added challenge of fighting against not only a boss, but also against time.

In order to make the timer go faster, there is a value within the action code that can be changed. This is, in most cases, set to 1000, which makes the timer count at a rate of one number per second. If this number is changed to, for instance, 500, then the timer will count at a rate of one number per half second.

Overall, I would rate this tutorial a 9. It was very helpful and resourceful, and presented almost no difficulty in its execution; a very well put together tutorial.

Blog Assignment for 2-11-11

With learning about custom cursors, I was able to draw anything that I wanted to and make it into an awesome, creative and funky cursor to use for selecting and clicking on objects. I created what might look a bit like a traditional cursor, though a bit more "cartoony," and I added a text that said "click" directly below the cursor.

Overall, this was an extremely fun category to learn about, and we'll certainly make good use of it over the course of the development of our game.

Blog Assignment for 2-4-11

Designing the preloader and status bar was a bit of a challenge, to start with. I had a particularly difficult time getting my preloader to properly stop when it was actually finished loading, and I also had a hard time getting the status bar to grow properly as the preloader loaded. However, as I kept pushing on and kept working on it, I ended up finishing it and getting to function the way it was designed in the Action Script. Not a bad learning experience, when it all comes down to it.
